Chemistry
of polymerization; mechanisms
such as step, radical chain, emulsion, ionic chain, chain
copolymerization, ring opening,
etc. Production, properties and fabrication of plastic materials of industrial importance. Rheology of polymers and polymer
solutions. Polymer composites, new polymers.
Course Objectives :
To give the students a background for engineering in polymer
synthesis, characterization and processing; abilities to communicate
effectively; a solid understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
an awareness of the need for, and ability to engage life-long learning; a
familiarity with the contemporary chemical engineering issues.

1. Introduction:
Classification of polymers,
bonding in polymers, stereoisomerism (1 week)
2. Polymer
synthesis: Condensation, addition polymerization, copolymerization, bulk, solution, suspension and emulsion polymeraziton
(2 weeks)
3. Molecular
weight and molecular weight determination (1 week)
4. Polymer
solutions and polymer solution thermodynamics (1.5 week)
5. Physical
states and transitions in polymers (1.5 week)
6. Crystallinity
and morphology of polymers (1 week)
7. Introduction
to rheology: elasticity, purely viscous flow, linear
viscoelasticity (1 week)
8. Polymer
processing: extrusion, calendering, coating, casting, injection molding, blow molding,
melt spinning (2 weeks)
9. Mechanical
properties of polymers (1 week)
10. Commercial
polymers, additives (1 week)
