Catalog Description:
The coast and coastal issues; the boundaries, shoreland and coastal waters subsystems; introduction to coastal ecosystems; coastal resources and uses; sustainable resources and uses; sustainable resource development and ecocoastal engineering; environmental impact assessment; coastal water quality management; beach management; marine and coastal protected area management; coastal zone management techniques; institutional and legal arrangement in Turkey.

Course Objectives:
The objective of this course is to introduce the basic physical and ecological characteristics of coastal areas which are important for their proper management, and the concept of integrated coastal zone management for sustainable development, together with available methods, institutional and legal arrangements.

Introduction: The coast and coastal issues, The natural system and physical processes, Boundaries of the coastal zone, The shorelands subsystem, The coastal waters subsystem, Areas of environmental concern, Introduction to coastal & sea resources, their uses, Process and elements of integrated coastal zone managemeot, Brief description of the Turkish coastal zone
2. Coastal Ecosystems: Basic ecological concepts, Factors affecting carrying capacity, Shoreland systems, Estuarine systems, Nearshore and ocean systems, Review of ecological principles for coastal zone
3. Coastal Resources & Uses: Renewable and non-renewable resources, Resource-use matrix, Use compatibility matrix
4. Coastal Resources Development: Concept of sustainable development, Concept and need for ecocoastal engineering, Guidelines for coastal resource development (Urbanization, Transportation, Fisheries, Energy, Industry, Agriculture)
5. Environmental Impact Assessment for Coastal Projects: Description of EIA process, Environmental impacts of coastal projects, EIA process in Turkey
6. Coastal Water Quality Management: Major pollutants, transport processes and pollution issues, International legislation for the Mediterranean, Turkish legislation
