Catalog Description:
Sources and types of pollutants; pollutant transport processes in coastal waters; mixing processes and models; data acquisition for sea outfall design; sea outfall design procedure; sea outfall design example, sea outfall practices in Turkey.

Course Objectives:
The objective of this course is to introduce the background information and all phases of the sea outfall design procedure, which is now being a standard engineering activity for all coastal communities in Turkey.

2. Pollutant Transport in Coastal Waters: Brief description of transport processes, conservation equation, Turbulent diffusion, Dispersion
3. Mixing Processes and Models: Dilution concept, Introduction to turbulent jets, Jets in various ambient conditions, Far-field mixing models
4. Data Acquisition for Sea Outfall Design: Introduction to coastal currents, Current measurement, Bathymetry and sea bed characteristics, Sea water density, Diffusion coefficients, Waves, Water level changes, Waste water density, Bacterial decay rate
5. Sea Outfall Design Procedure: Planning and layout, Hydrographic design,
Buoyancy spreading, Prediction of trapping level statistics, Prediction of pollution statistics, Hydraulic design, Energy requirements for sea outfall discharges, Wave and current forces on submarine pipelines, Pipe burial design, Pipe laying methods
