CE 490 Earthquake Resistant Design

Catalog Description:
Causes of earthquakes, earthquake magnitude and intensity, earthquake ground motions. Seismic response analysis of simple structures. Elastic response spectra, design spectra. Earthquake design criteria. Equivalent static lateral force procedure. Design codes, design applications.

Course Objectives:
• Introduce the students to the concepts of analysis of structures for earthquakes
• Involve the students in open-ended seismic resistant design of concrete and steel building structures and geotechnical structures
• Perform the tasks of preliminary earthquake resistant design of structures and foundations

• Linear elastic response spectra, inelastic response spectra and design spectra (3 hours)
• Equivalent static lateral force procedure (3 hours)
• Seismic design of concrete buildings (3 hours)
• Seismic design of steel buildings (3 hours)
• Seismic design of geotechnical structures (2 hours)
• Seismic design of foundations(2 hours)
• Seismic design of base isolated buildings (2 hours)
